After five years of teaching physics at Gibbons, Mr. Mark Perry is getting ready to leave teaching for a different path: medical school. Over these years, he taught AP Physics 1, AP Physics 2, and AP Physics C: Mechanics. He helps students with hard tasks while building relationships with them.
He will start attending Campbell University School of Osteopathic Medicine to become a doctor. His long-term goal is to complete a surgical residency and eventually specialize in neurosurgery.
“I loved helping kids here, and I want to continue to help people in the future.” Said Perry.
Although he is excited for the future, leaving Gibbons will not be easy. One of his favorite things about the school is the strong sense of community. He recalled asking Principal Jeff Bell to describe Gibbons in one word during his interview, and his answer was “community.”
After teaching at the school for many years, he said he now fully understands what that means.
He also reflected on how special the campus is. His classroom is located above the chapel, giving him the opportunity to visit the chapel whenever he wants.
Another part of Gibbons that stood out to him was how students of every grade level are encouraged to make a lasting impact on the school. Whether they are freshmen or seniors, students are given opportunities to lead, serve others, and contribute to the community around them.
“Seeing what kids are doing outside of the classroom. Seeing how active you guys are.” Perry said.
As he prepares to begin medical school, he leaves behind a legacy of teaching and dedication to his students. While his future now shifts toward medicine, the impact he made at Gibbons will continue long after he leaves the classroom.
