The ‘80s are back.
The game that swept America by storm in the 1980s and ‘90s has made a resurgence this month not only in Gibbons but across the country.
Hacky Sack is a game that was invented in 1972 where players stand in a circle doing whatever it takes to keep the “sack” off the ground. The rules are simple as the only body parts you cannot use are the hands and arms. The game usually begins with a “serve” to another player’s chest, where they will begin the rally.
It is a fun, competitive, and high-energy game that is sure to bring people together.
Whether in the quad or up front on the campus green, it is certain that you will see a group playing Hacky Sack.
“In these past two weeks, Hacky Sack has brought the whole school together, creating a great student environment,” said junior Declan Daner.
In the game’s resurgence, social media has played a huge role in the reason that this game is so popular and bringing people together. The Instagram and TikTok account IS Preps, which stands for Inside Sack Preps, has gained 12 thousand followers and is a play on the popular lacrosse account Inside Lacrosse Preps.
This game has become very popular among the lacrosse community in particular, as many of the Hacky Sack pages are plays on lacrosse pages.
The Inside Sack account posts clips of the best rallies of the day and posts weekly rankings of the top schools in the country. To be ranked, a school must send its clips to Inside Sack, which will then consider them to be in the Top 20.
There have been some incredible rallies. Some kids have done backflips, among many other crazy tricks.
Amazon is currently sold out of so many of the leading footbag brands as demand has become higher and higher.
There is no telling how long Hacky Sack will still be popular, but for now, it is here to stay.
