Tennis Secures a Trip to the State Championship on Friday

Two important playoff matches have led the boys tennis team to their first state championship since 2015. The boys played three matches in a row, playing fatigued and still getting the job done.

On Wednesday they beat New Hanover 6-0 in an important match which led them to the semi-finals. On Thursday they beat Sanderson in the semi-finals to secure a trip to the state championship against Grimsley.

It was an extremely close match against Sanderson after Gibbons eventually snuck away with a 5-4 win. After singles ended in a 3-3 tie, doubles were needed for a tie-breaker. After losing the first doubles match, they did not look back and won two matches straight to beat Sanderson.

The state championship will be held on May 15 at the Burlington Tennis Center. No matter what happens, this has been a historic season nonetheless.
