February was filled with great championship performances for Cardinal Gibbons athletes throughout the multiple winter sports and the swimming and diving team definitely had their part in it.

Gibbons excelled greatly at the NCHSAA 4A championships, with the biggest individual performance coming from freshman Nikki Nixon, who won the 100 yard butterfly in 53.40 seconds.

Nixon is the 20th winner of a individual girls swimming state championship race since 2006, and the 33rd winner of an event when including relays. She was also second in the 50-yard freestyle.

Nixon competed in two individual events along with two relays throughout the state meet. She helped her team finish 10th in the 400-yard freestyle relay and ninth in the 200-yard freestyle relay.

Senior diver Chloe Perkins also had an exciting state championship meet, taking second in the 1-meter to finish her career.

Both the girls and boys squad placed highly amongst the best teams in the state with the girls tying for 11th place and the boys finishing as the runners-up behind Marvin Ridge.
