Cardinal Gibbons High School has a rich history of good athletics. Just last year two coaches here at Cardinal Gibbons were nominated for National Coach of the Year. You may be wondering…
Is Cardinal Gibbons more than just good athletics?
The answer would be yes. Cardinal Gibbons educators and coaches work their very hardest to provide students with a good Catholic-based education. Our experienced coaches and our passionate teachers demonstrate the perfect role models for inspiring students.
Someone important in our Gibbons community who serves as both is Coach Steven Wright. Coach Wright is our Cardinal Gibbons football coach and one of our spiritual leaders.
“(Faith) is central, it marks who I am as a person. I am first a disciple of Jesus Christ, second a husband, third a dad, and fourth a teacher and coach,” Wright said. “I can’t separate who I am from what I do, so when the school hires me as a Christian, that’s who they’re getting.”
On the field, Coach Wright has led the football team to the ultimate accomplishment of winning their first state championship in the fall of 2021. Off the field, Coach Wright guides his student athletes to a Christ-like life and provides light in the Gibbons community.
Wright incorporates faith into his team by holding a Wednesday night “Pizza and Prayer.”
“Pizza and Prayer is one of our traditions where we eat pizza and then get into small groups and talk about our core values which are Biblically grounded,” Wright said. “Our six core values of the football program are love, sacrifice, service, accountability, community, and joy. We take one of those per week, make it a teaching point, and then we talk about it on Wednesday night.”
Wright finalizes the week by attending a Friday mass with his team.
For home games, Fr. Luke hosts a mass for them. For away games, they attend a chapel service. This tradition is one that goes for all of our varsity sports teams here and prepares the athletes for a well fought safe game.
Coach Wright is the quintessence of all the coaches at Cardinal Gibbons. They work on and off the field to make students better spiritually, mentally, and physically.
Off the field, Coach Wright hopes his players see him as someone who is holding them accountable to the standards that others are asking them to live up to as both football players and as students and people.
“I can look back and see how God leverages what I do to hopefully impact other coaches and the players I’m responsible for,” Wright said.
