The North Carolina Governor’s School is a four-week summer program in which gifted students are chosen to reside at one of two campuses–this year’s hosts being Winston-Salem State University and Meredith College–and develop their intellectual skills in a certain discipline. Students were nominated by a Cardinal Gibbons instructor, required to submit a discipline-specific application, chosen by the school, and then selected by NCGS. On June 18th, selected applicants moved into the college dormitories and began challenging classes that allowed them to adopt new, creative ways of thinking about and practicing their discipline. Students were enriched by a vivid social environment, instructors and fellows who offered countless bits of wisdom, and supplemental seminars for students who wished to dive even deeper into their intellect.
When asked to describe their experience there, four of Gibbons’ Governor’s School ‘23 Alumni said:
“Governor’s School was a very unique experience. I was pushed out of my comfort zone and learned so much about myself and others in the process.” –Grant Ozaki, Class of 2024, GSW Mathematics
“Governor’s School was truly one of the best experiences in my life and it gave me a lot of insight and perspective on myself and the world around me. Something I will take away is the sense of self I found and how I interact with those around me–both strangers and friends alike.” –Emily Martin, Class of 2024, GSE Theatre
“Governor’s School was an amazing experience that exposed me to so many interesting and diverse people. I hope to carry the acceptance and openness that was so prevalent through my senior year.” –Harrison Rurka, Class of 2024, GSE Spanish
“Governor’s School was unlike anything else I have ever experienced. It helped me become more confident and able to learn in all settings.” –Kate Hansen, Class of 2024, GSE Theatre
