If you are into things like Super Mario Bros, then the Gibbons esports team is perfect for you.
This club started as a club that was more competitive in gaming. Mr. Mike Sheehan, the club moderator, said that there would be tournaments and games set up.
This club hasn’t been around for a very long time though. It was started last year, and Mr. Stewart Aull also runs it with Sheehan. It has grown quite a bit since the beginning of last year as more students find out about it.
How they play the games and do competitions has grown as well.
“We use an online system called PlayVS. We can sign up each semester with teams for different games. This fall we played Super Smash Bros., and in the spring it will hopefully be Mario Kart,” Sheehan said.
“For each game, there is a team of three that plays,” Sheehan said. “We get matched with another high school in the United States, and we meet them in the online hub on Wednesdays at 4 p.m. for the match.”
For a game like Super Brothers, the teams play three matches, and the best of three wins. For the whole team, it is the best of five games.
Since this is competitive gaming, the team will try to prepare themselves for how to battle the other team in the game. If they can find out who’s playing, they can better prepare by looking at things like stats and previous games that were played.
Even though there can be a competitive aspect, there is also a chance to just do this for fun.
During community time on Tuesdays and Thursdays, the big screen in the cafeteria is set up so that students may play games and decompress between classes. This is overseen by Aull when it happens.
As this club continues to thrive and win games, the students in it continue to grow their skills and friendships.
