Club Spotlight: Book Club

After the final bell rings, the hallways slowly begin to empty as students head to their sports practices or home for the day, but for some students, the day isn’t quite over yet. Every other Wednesday at 3:05 p.m., a group of students gathers in the learning lab for the book club, bringing with them books, backpacks, and a shared interest in stories.

As students trickle into the room, the quiet study space fills with conversation and laughter. Some members walk in holding the book they are currently reading, ready to talk about their favorite moments or surprising plot twists.

Others arrive simply to relax and spend time with friends. The atmosphere is casual and welcoming, making it a place where students can unwind after a busy school day.

The club focuses on a wide variety of books. Most selections fall into genres such as fiction, mysteries, thrillers, and young adult novels. Members help choose the books themselves, which keeps everyone involved in the process.

“At the beginning of each quarter, we take nominations from the club, and then we send a poll for the most popular ideas. The top two most voted books are chosen,” club president Alyssa Holloway said.

This system allows students to have flexibility with their reading. Some members choose to read one book, while others decide to read both selections. Some students attend meetings even if they have not finished the book.

“Usually students pick one to read, but we also have plenty of members who read both or neither,” Holloway said.

Since students have busy schedules with sports, homework, and other activities, the club works hard to make meetings engaging and relaxed. Activities are often planned so that everyone can participate, even if they have not read the book.

“I love to have an activity planned for each meeting, but it’s important to me that the club still has a relaxed and flexible mood. Everyone can chat, discuss, and participate as much or as little as they want,” she said.

One of the most popular meetings this year was a creative activity where members decorated their favorite books.

“The book-bedeazzling event is the most popular; the only thing better than your favorite book is your favorite book with gems on the cover,” Holloway said.

Although reading is the main focus, the club also helps students connect with others who share similar interests. The club offers something valuable beyond just books.

“Having a place to hang out and meet new people with similar interests is super valuable,” she said.

With dozens of students signed up and new members joining throughout the year, the club continues to grow.

“Please come!” Holloway said. “We always want new members, and we have a ton of fun.”
