Everything You Need to Know about Placement Tests

Course registration opens on Jan. 20 this year. When course registration opens, students are offered courses that they have qualified for through their semester one grades, their PSAT scores, or their current course.

If a student does not qualify for a class they were hoping to take, they may take a placement test to place into that course. If the student passes, the course will open for them.

There are eight core classes required by Gibbons, Gibbons Freshman Seminar, English, Math, Physical Education, Science, Social Studies, Theology, World Languages.

Four English credits are required for graduation, four math credits are required to graduate, (seniors can take two math courses). One credit in PE is required, students who are interested in computer science, technology, or fine arts may put off the PE requirement in 9th grade and earn PE through independent study or through a school sport. Three science credits are required, Biology and a Physical Science (Chemistry or Physical Science) are required. Three social studies credits are required. World History, U.S History, Economics, and U.S government must be taken. Four credits for Theology are required, one for each year. Two credits in the same World language are mandatory between French, Latin, Spanish, and American sign language.

When signing up for a placement test, there will be information on what certain topics will be on the test. For example, the Math III honors placement test may be geometry and algebra heavy. Students should use this information to help prepare for their test.

It is not necessary to study for hours and hours as most of the tests are short and mostly multiple choice. If a student doesn’t pass their test, there are still plenty of options for them to choose from.

A student may take as many placement tests as they’d like, but there are only three dates to take tests. Jan. 26-28. If a student cannot come to their certain placement test date, they may have the opportunity to set a makeup test.

A student cannot take the same placement test twice. Placement tests will be available to take before and after school.

To sign up for a placement test, a student will need to register online by filling out a form with their name, grade, and school email and the course they’d like to take a placement test for. After they are registered the student just needs to show up to the classroom where their test will be and take their test.
