Colorful costumes and the chatter of excited voices filled the theater as the overhead lights started to dim. The Gibbons Dance Concert was about to begin.
Gibbons Dance puts on two shows a year, one in the winter and one in the spring. During each performance, the dancers bring the themes of the shows to life through their use of movement, music, and color to create an immersive experience.
This year, the theme of the dance concert was “In Our Element” which was inspired by the elements that shape our world. Many elements were showcased, from wind, water, and fire, to gold and astatine.
“It was really creative. All of the dances were different and I think the variety was good,” said Stella McCallum, a Dance III Honors student.
The concerts were held on Nov. 19 and 20. From Dance I to Dance V, students and teachers showcased unique and beautiful dances, all with different styles. From contemporary pieces to amazing acrobatics, all of the dances proved that everyone involved worked so hard to make the show flawless.
“On rehearsal week, we had to stay after school until 6:30, and we had shows on Wednesday and Thursday,” said McCallum.
The teachers, students, and stage crew have been working on this show since August. This hard work was shown through the precise and elegant dances, which conveyed their story with clarity and grace.
The Gibbons dance concerts continue to improve year after year, and it’s easy to see that through these beautiful performances they put on every semester.
