The Cardinal Gibbons football team has plowed through many teams and become a No. 1 seed in the 7A playoffs. Throughout the season Gibbons went 9-1, with the one loss coming to Mallard Creek by just four points, 20-16.

Cardinal Gibbons had beaten Maury, out of Virginia, which snapped their 31-game win streak. This streak had been built over the course of their back-to-back state championships in 2023 and 2024, which was the first time in school history the team won consecutive state titles. The loss to Cardinal Gibbons was their first since the 2022 Virginia state playoffs.

Cardinal Gibbons has also set the school’s “NCHSAA era” scoring record in football this season with 71 points against Sanderson. In the conference, they beat Holly Springs 56-0, Middle Creek 40-14, Sanderson 71-13, and Cary 46-0. Doing this has set them up for success and made them the one seed and has given them a bye in the first round.

The Gibbons team is supported by many strong players, this includes senior running back Noah Terry, who’s averaging 82.2 yards per game. Senior wide receiver Connor McGeehan is averaging 55.3 receiving yards per game. Sophomore linebacker Skylar Alston is averaging 8.6 tackles per game and leading the team in sacks is junior defensive end Griffin Cockerham with 7.5 sacks. Leading the team with interceptions is senior defensive back Jack Richards with four.

During the Mallard Creek game, Gibbons starting quarterback Gannon Jones was hurt. leading to Connor Lindsey having to step up and lead Gibbons to success for the rest of the season and now through playoffs. Lindsey has connected for 16 touchdown passes this season and has thrown just over 1,000 yards. He has also thrown for an average of 111.4 yards per game.

Cardinal Gibbons will have their first playoff game against Fuquay-Varina after the Bengals took down Holly Springs and Gibbons had a bye in the first round of the playoffs.
