The final week of the first academic quarter is here as most teams are beginning conference play looking to make deep playoff runs. In the week of Sep. 29, every fall sports team competed in many different important contests across the state.
Men’s Soccer
The men’s soccer team competed in two games last week. Gibbons lost a 2-0 game against new conference member Holly Springs.
The Crusaders then traveled to Middle Creek to take on the Mustangs in what would be nailbiter all throughout. The Crusaders ended up losing 5-4 in overtime, but being close in this game was important as anything could happen in conference play.
This week, the Crusaders will face Sanderson at home and they will travel to Cary.
Field Hockey
The field hockey team collected two huge wins as they travel deeper into their quest for a three-peat. They faced Carrboro where they would win 8-0 and they faced Our Lady of Good Counsel from Maryland, securing a 3-1 win.
In the Carrboro game, Molly Nussbaumer and Chloe Todd stood out as they combined for seven points.
In their test against Our Lady of Good Counsel, the Crusaders came out on top to extend their undefeated season. In this game Todd scored two goals and Kacy Buckel scored one to propel the Crusaders to a victory.
The Crusaders are looking forward to finishing the season strong as they will face Chapel Hill and Jordan this week and will end the regular season with Riverside next week.
Volleyball
The volleyball team had a two game week playing conference opponents Felton Grove and Holly Springs winning both games 3-0.
The Crusaders have looked very strong in conference play as they are 5-0 with four more games to play.
The Crusaders will use these final games to not only keep pushing towards a conference championship, but also clinch a top seed in the east side of the playoff bracket. This week the Crusaders will face Middle Creek at home and Sanderson on the road.
Flag Football
The flag football team won two big conference matchups. The Crusaders won a big game against Felton Grove, 28-0 and they beat Cary 28-7.
The Crusaders hope to stay on top of the Triangle Six conference as they will play Holly Springs and Felton Grove.
Tennis
The women’s tennis team has one more match as they look to finish their regular season strong. The Crusaders began their week facing Durham Academy and coming out with a close win (5-4).
The Crusaders had another home match against Cary which they also won (9-0), staying undefeated in conference play.
Now, the Crusaders will face Sanderson, and then they will await their seeding for the 7A playoffs. This match against Sanderson will be very important for them as they chase a conference championship.
Cross Country
The cross country teams competed in a huge event over the weekend. This event was the Great American XC Festival in Cary.
This event hosted schools from all over the state and even country. Sophomore Kaitlyn Estep finished 11th out of 362 in her race. The girls team ended up finishing fourth place out of 40.
For the boys, junior James Elliot finished 36th in his race out of 380 runners. The boys finished 14th out of 40.
This week, the Crusaders will not compete as they prepare for the Triangle Six conference race as they chase the Triangle Six Championship.
Football
Coming off of their bye week, the football team traveled to Charlotte to face the new school Ambassador Christian. This was the Crusaders’ final out of conference game of the season and they dominated in all facets of the game as they came out with a 42-0 victory.
Senior Jack Richards had two interceptions to solidify the defense’s dominant game as they posted a big shutout. This week, the Crusaders will play at home versus Holly Springs.
