Why Student Athletes Choose Gibbons

It’s no surprise that Cardinal Gibbons is outstanding in their sports, but as a private Catholic school, others tend to wonder how Gibbons has built such a successful sports program from year-to-year.

The school won 10 state championships last year alone. The Gibbons athletic department prides itself on giving student athletes a wide variety of opportunities to compete at a high level.

Cardinal Gibbons does not recruit student athletes but what attracts high-caliber athletes to Gibbons is the amount of resources the school has to offer. Gibbons has multiple resources for each of the teams such as a mental performance coach, a strength and conditioning director, nutritionist, and top of the line coaches.

“Our reputation allows us to attract the best of the best in the sport itself, but we look for mission-fit,”said athletics director Tonya Holmes.

“Mission-fit” is someone who believes in the Gibbons culture, Christian faith, and somebody who respects the legacy and traditions we have.

“I think when you achieve a (certain) level of success people want to be a part of it,” Holmes said.

Gibbons not only has many resources for sports on the physical level but also on the spiritual level.

“I think our school mission is our backbone, whether it’s retreats, team masses or talking with Fr. Luke,” Holmes said.

Cardinal Gibbons stands out not just for its trophies and titles, but for the way it invests in every aspect of its student athletes growth. A focus on faith and character, and a commitment to tradition, Gibbons has created a legacy that inspires both current, and future students, as well as alumni. The school’s success is recognized for the strong, mission-driven individuals Gibbons prides itself on sending to the next chapter of their lives.
