After last soccer season ended in the fourth round of playoffs, the current seniors want to leave their best mark in their last season at Cardinal Gibbons.
The men’s varsity soccer team consists of 11 seniors, 11 juniors, and four sophomores. The start of the season has been slow for the team with a few losses and many ties but they hold their heads high preparing for the long season ahead.
That first victory hasn’t arrived yet, but with games at Southern Durham and at home against Felton Grove this week, it should be sooner rather than later.
At its core, soccer is a team sport built on quick decisions, precise coordination, and constant communication, all of which are essential for a high school varsity team to succeed, an important part on and off the field that our Gibbons team has aced.
During previous years, there have always been elected captains to guide the team throughout the season, however this year that is not the case.
The team decided to not have an official captain acknowledging that every person on the team contributes in a way captains do, so they all should receive the credit for such effort. Win or loss, this team is strongly connected, having each other’s backs for any obstacle whether it’s on the field, during practice, or day to day life.
The best advice senior players Jesus Espitia and Carter Macey can give current and future players is to make sure you show up ready and prepared and and to make the best of your chances.
Even with obstacles in the beginning of the season, Gibbons hasn’t lost hope and aims for the best ending there can be, especially with all the seniors wanting to leave an unforgettable mark.
