Nurse Bachinski: Dedicated to Keeping Students Healthy

Nestled in the corner near the chapel, there’s a room with a friendly face waiting to help. The nurse’s office is more than a place to grab an ice pack or bandage. It’s a safe place for students who need care, comfort, or sometimes just someone who listens.

Many know who Nurse Bachinski is, but many still don’t know her. She is always willing to lend a helping hand.

Bachinski, who has been at Gibbons for one year, was inspired to become a nurse to help people. At first, she wanted to be a therapist, but ultimately, she decided to become a nurse because it was a hands-on job.

“I wanted to help people in a proactive, hands-on way,” Bachinski said.

Her passion for helping others shines through the work she does every day at Gibbons.

At the beginning of each year, she focuses on verifying immunization records for all freshmen and seniors and reviewing anyone who has any preexisting conditions. As the year progresses, she manages chronic illnesses, helps students who don’t feel well, and supports people who need immediate medical attention.

“The most common reason students come in is nausea or stomach upset,” Bachinski explained. “Sometimes it’s from being sick, but a lot of times it’s nerves from tests, friendships, or anxiety.”

While she helps with many health concerns, the job comes with its own challenges.

One thing most students may not know is that being a school nurse is often a solo job.

“In most nursing jobs, you’re with other nurses or doctors,” Bachinski said. Here it’s just me, so I must be resourceful and stay connected with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.”

Even though working alone can be challenging, it also allows her to bond closely with students.

“What I enjoy most about working at Gibbons is the relationship-building,” she said.

“I love seeing students grow throughout the year and being able to help them during tough times …I get excited when you guys are excited.”

For Bachinski, the best part of the job is being a part of the Gibbons community.
