Over the past four years, The Gibbons Globe has evolved from a club containing fewer than 10 individuals to its own class twice the size.
Freshman Firsts
My journey began during my freshman year, when I walked on campus for the first time seeing the board of clubs and activities.
There was the Newspaper Club.
Writing had been something I was always interested in, and I remember walking into room 108, excited to be a part of the community.
The club was a slow start, and with the former moderator Mrs. Herche leaving in the next year, I was left to question if Newspaper would be an option for my sophomore year.
However, when class registration came out in February, I saw the option for Newspaper Honors.
Sophomore Shift
In 2023, The Gibbons Globe expanded into a class led by English teacher and sports journalist Mr. Blake. It contained eight students who were eager to hit the ground running in this new class.
That first year as a class, we produced 86 stories which was a huge success compared to the club’s count of around 30.
That year’s group was a bond like no other, and when I really fell in love with journalism.
Junior Jump
The next year was the second time Journalism was a class (now called Journalism and Reporting Honors). We went from eight students to 20.
This was a big change, especially for me being moved from reporter to editor, and handling all social media.
Junior year came with many challenges and the success of more than 200 stories.
The class became more of a learning experience than just a writing space.
Senior Summary
Over the past three years, The Gibbons Globe has transformed from a small disordered club, to an honors class with 17 students ready to become better writers and learn valuable life skills.
This year I have taken on the role as editor-in-chief. These are some big shoes to fill in from Reagan Tomczak and Blair Mitchell, but I am ready to start my last year as not only a writer, but as a leader.
This year’s goal for The Gibbons Globe is to continue raising the standard of student journalism at our school through quality storytelling, consistent publishing, and stronger collaboration within our team.
We aim to not only exceed last year’s record number of stories, but to also deepen the impact of our reporting by covering the voices, events, and experiences that matter most to the Gibbons community.
As editor-in-chief, I hope to inspire our writers to take creative risks, ask thoughtful questions, and approach every assignment with both curiosity and integrity.
Looking back at my first club meeting in Room 108, it’s incredible to see how far we’ve come.
But more importantly, I’m excited about where we’re going this school year.
