How Gibbons Won Its First Team Wrestling Title

On Saturday, Feb. 8, the Cardinal Gibbons wrestling team brought home their first dual-team state championship.

After earning the 1-seed of the playoffs, the team advanced to the state finals against Hickory Ridge.

The Crusaders dominated the match with a final score of 41-22. Team captain Liam Hickey set the team up for success after he claimed the first win of the day in the 144-pound weight class.

This was an unexpected lineup, considering Hickey does not often wrestle in the 144 weight class. Although it was unexpected, it was nonetheless a win.

Hickey was also named Most Outstanding Wrestler of the championship match.

The win did not come easy for the Crusaders. Their season began in late October with two-hour practices every day, training to strengthen their skills.

The team has an exemplary bond which is strengthened by the four team captains, all of which are seniors: Jonathan Binanay, Liam Hickey, Beckham Enoch, and Spencer Sterling. These captains have a prominent characteristic of leadership which only helps strengthen the bond of the team

“They’re probably the best guys you could have as your captains, they lead the team easily, they run the room the way they want it, and most importantly they support you both win or lose,” Alexander Rodriguez said.

Along with strong captains, the Crusaders do not lack passion and skill for the sport. Each and every wrestler is determined and driven which contributed to the success of the team.
