How Faith is Incorporated in the Classroom

At Cardinal Gibbons, faith is an integral part of the community we belong in.

Faith is all around our school, whether through our Spiritual Life Department or Theology classes, but we often forget how faith is incorporated into the classroom.

People tend to think that faith is only present in the classroom during our Theology class, but at Gibbons, faith can be included in every subject.

Many teachers at Gibbons implement their faith into their character, but one teacher who really stands out is Megan O’Neill.

Ms. O’Neill is a beloved math teacher here at Gibbons. Not only does she make her students laugh, she offers constant support when anyone needs help. These qualities are why so many students love her, but her brightest quality of all is her love for Jesus.

My students know I love Jesus because I say it, but more importantly, I hope they know I love Jesus by the way I act – the way I treat them, the way I love them, and the way I care about them,” said O’Neill in an email response.

Math class can be one of the places where faith in the classroom is rarely seen, but not for Ms. O’Neill. O’Neill starts every math class by praying as a group, sharing intentions, and talking about faith with one another.

Showing faith in the classroom is a way we bring our Gibbons community together. It helps unify students under Christ and make the classroom a place  we can call home. Integrating faith into our classes, even for five minutes, can help kids belong and have a place to talk about faith.

“One-hundred percent faith should be integrated in all classes, not just theology. Talking about or living out faith only in theology class is the equivalent of only having a Sunday morning faith. Faith and a relationship with God should be a continuous thing, not something reserved for the pews or a theology classroom,” said O’Neill in an email response.

Putting faith into the classrooms is what makes Cardinal Gibbons stand out. The love the teachers and students show, not only for God, but for each other, is what helps our community have a firm foundation.
