A Student’s Guide to Elective Course Options

A Student’s Guide to Elective Course Options

When deciding what classes to take next year, it can be a struggle with the amount of options given. Juniors and seniors,  in particular, can stop taking a few subjects and focus more on electives. I talked to a few students and heard what classes can help in the long run and are interesting to individuals.

Athletic Training Honors (Year-Long)

Athletic training is a class where you learn about the body and its health, while getting to work on taping and help with sports events. This elective is a year long, for an honors credit, and is only available to juniors and seniors.

“This class has allowed me to learn in a fun environment and be able to progress in the career I am going into,” Bridget Mazzo, a junior currently taking athletic training, said.

She said there can be work outside of class, but altogether it is a great learning experience and something people should definitely take.

Business and Marketing (Semester-Long)

Marketing is a class where you learn about strategies and trends in the industry. Business is more like a college class with guest speakers and intern for businesses. With creating reports and projects these classes are beneficial for a future college student.

“These classes helped encourage me to study business and help prepare me for my future college career,” junior Bailey Booth, who has taken both of these classes, said.

Psychology or Sociology (Honors and AP options)

Psychology is a class where you learn about your brain and how we think the way we think.

“It is mainly memorization, but if you are willing to put in the time to do that it will boost your GPA highly,” Izzy Brown, a junior in AP Psychology, said.

She tells how the class is interesting and easy to understand. This class is available as a semester with the opportunity to do extra assignments to get an honors credit, or as a yearlong AP class.

Sociology is more about how humans interact with each other. This class is available as a semester elective and also has the ability to become honors.

Christian Service Learning Honors (Semester-Long)

Service learning is a senior theology elective where you go beyond the classroom to serve the Raleigh community. In the class there are seven sites you can help at: Method Road Community Center, Note in the Pocket, Habitat for Humanity Restore, Salvation Army Shelter, Beginning and Beyond, A Safe Place Child Development Center, Green Share Project, Food Bank of North Carolina.

There are three students on each site, so you create a family within the class.

“This course offers an opportunity for students to engage in meaningful service with the larger triangle community,” said Mrs. Mitchell, who will co-teach the class with Mr. Tobin.

Journalism and Reporting Honors (Year-Long)

There might be a bit of bias for this one, but as an editor of The Gibbons Globe, Journalism and Reporting is immensely helpful to better writing skills and leans into the consideration of a career in journalism. I have taken this class for two years and it has made me not only a better writer, but have an outlet where I can express myself.

Journalism is also available to all sophomores, juniors, and seniors and is an honors credit, which is helpful to one’s GPA.
