Do you enjoy reading? Book club is often put into a category of just-a-fun club to do if you enjoy reading – which it is – but at Gibbons it has a stronger purpose to the members.
“Book Club is a diverse group of students joined together in their shared love of reading. In Book Club we have members across all four grades, and we aim to read books from a number of genres, authors, and time periods,” said Sophie Curtis, club president.
Whether it’s enjoying freshman Alyssa Holloway’s brownies or cozying up to your favorite book – for Curtis it would be Suzanne Collins, The Hunger Games – there’s always students thoroughly enjoying themselves during the time they have together.
Making a Difference
Book Club holds a book drive during Catholic Schools Week that donates books to less fortunate kids who don’t have access to books. This is important for people to know that reading and analyzing books only scratches the tip of the iceberg. There’s more to the club than it seems.
“As a club we hold an annual Book Drive during Catholic Schools Week. It’s important to remember that reading is truly a privilege, and there are many children in the Wake County community who don’t have access to books. Last year we collected around 1,000 books, which were donated to Wake Up and Read,” said Curtis.
Wake Up and Read is a local organization in Wake County that believes that all kids deserve the privilege of reading. Each year the Gibbons Book Club collects books and donates them to Wake Up and Read.
“This club offers students a community of people with a similar interest. However, we have kids in Book Club who prefer to read books from so many genres that nobody is truly the exact same,” said Curtis.
Community
“It’s so full circle because all of my sisters were/are in the club so it’s so fun to do what we love together,” said Blair Holloway, sister of Alyssa and senior Rowan Holloway.
