Yay Lunch! has returned for its second year at Gibbons, however many people have noticed some changes. While the convenience is better than ever, the prices are higher than before.
Luke Mallory, a junior at Cardinal Gibbons, was here for both Yay Lunch! and the old form of lunch.
He, along with many other students, believed that the food items were getting smaller, even though the prices were staying the same.
According to analysis done by The Gibbons Globe, they are correct. Using receipts from this year and last year, prices have gone up but portions have not.
Tony’s chocolate bars being sold at Yay were $2 last year, and they marked them up to $3 with no change in portions.
Gatorade went up in price by half a dollar, and while that doesn’t seem like a big difference, the more you buy Gatorade, the more of a difference it makes.
Chick-fil-A sandwiches were $5, but are now $6. Chocolate milk increased in price from $2 to $2.50. Cheese pizza had a slight increase from $3 to $3.25.
Some sophomore students even emailed the company and asked for them to change the ice cream back to the original cup sizes.
“I spend $25-30 per week at Yay,” Mallory said. “I’ve noticed the prices going up, and the portions going down compared to last year.”
Bennett Muller, a sophomore at Cardinal Gibbons, likes the idea of Yay Lunch!, but has some ideas to make it better.
“If the prices went down, or even back to what they were last year, I think that the community would really appreciate and even promote Yay Lunch!” Muller said. “The prices being lower would lower the want to leave campus during lunch, and would allow for more lunch time activities for the community.”
There are still some advantages to having Yay Lunch!.
In the past, students and teachers had their lunch period to get their food. Now with Yay, the Gibbons community can go get food in between classes, during community time, or even if their teacher lets them during class periods. With Yay Lunch!, students and educators can go and get a bag of chips, or an ice cream cup instead of just powering through.
“Yay Lunch! is very convenient for me during flex,” Gabriel Anderson said. “I really like being able to just go grab some food and get on with my free time.”
