Club Spotlight: Short Filmmaking with Media Club

Beginning this year, something new was brought to the table at Media Club: short filmmaking. With an ambition to create a space for prospective filmmakers to form a community and experience creative liberty within the artistic realm, this group has begun working on their debut short film, Detention.

During the month of September, the group held their first meeting and progress has flourished ever since. With about 20 kids showing up to its first interest meeting, many have become recurring members, taking different areas of interest in positions like acting, filming, editing, graphic design, and script writing.

Having such a talent-diverse group of kids interested in helping bring this group together has helped turn the sometimes hectic process that is filmmaking into a collaborative, fun, and accomplishing project.

After discussing the vision for the short film in September, the production process finally took life beginning in October.

Every aspect of the filmmaking process was student-produced and led; the script, the acting, the editing, and the filming.

Each aspect was brought together to form the bigger picture by the dedication of the students, even when it meant staying after school until 5 p.m.

The project has given students a chance to showcase their talents, especially those interested in drama or editing, giving them hands-on experience; and learning as they go.

This of course does not mean you have to be an experienced participant to contribute, if anything it’s encouraged to try new aspects of the filmmaking process as any Gibbons student is welcome to join in on the fun.

Thanks to those involved, with all of their contributions, production was able to be wrapped this month, with the short film premiering right around the corner on the 22nd in room 107 afterschool.

The two student leaders of the project – this reporter and Natalia Caloca-Desilos – are so excited to debut their first short film and are so grateful to have been able to work with such dedicated members, hopefully establishing a long-lasting short filmmaking community here at Cardinal Gibbons.
