Established in 2017 by three Cardinal Gibbons lacrosse players, the Cardinal Gibbons Fishing Club has been a beloved activity since its beginning.
“Gibbons Fishing Club was created to give experienced and non-experienced students and educators the opportunity to learn about fishing, meet new people, have fun in a low-pressure environment, and enjoy the outdoors,” said Mr. Mike Curatolo, the club’s moderator.
The Fishing Club goes off campus to enjoy the outdoors and fish around seven times every school year. In addition to their fishing trips, the club comes together a few times to make bait, including soft plastic baits and hard plastic baits.
Joining the Fishing Club can give you a chance to “go out and learn to enjoy the outdoors or a release from the pressures of academics, sports, fine arts or home life”, said Curatolo.
Curatolo wants to teach his students about “enjoying the experience whether they catch fish or not, how to support one another, and how to interact with one another in a positive way.”
Curatolo’s favorite part of leading the Fishing Club is interacting with and teaching a diverse group of students. Some are there to get better at fishing and making bait, and some are there to meet new people and try out a new hobby. Mr. Curatolo just wants all of his students to enjoy a pressure-free activity that he believes is “becoming a lost art.”
