As spring sports have officially begun, several winter teams are wrapping up their seasons. Recently, on Feb. 9, yet another state championship was won.
Four runners from Cardinal Gibbons put together a powerful performance to take the girls 4-by-800 meter relay crown and walk away with a state championship banner. The team consisted of senior Peyton LaNasa, juniors Hannah Rae Shaffer and Addy Mitchell, and sophomore Maggie Whitham.
Performing well all season and coming off of an impressive cross country state title, this relay team officially qualified for the state meet on Feb. 2 at the Mondo Elite Invitational, with a time of 9:22.35, which at the time was the No. 6 fastest time in the U.S. for the 2024 season.
Continuing into the indoor track and field state championship, they brought their skills and put them to the test in the first of several races that day. Their hard work paid off and the team won by seven seconds with a time of 9:18.21. This time set a state meet record, as they topped their qualifying mark, and also was U.S. No. 4 for this winter at the time.
With a state championship already under their belt, several of the runners doubled or even tripled their events. Addy Mitchell and Maggie Whitham competed in the 1,600 meter championship, along with teammate Ina Lazarczyk. Whitham also competed in the 1,000 meter later that night. Hannah Rae Shaffer doubled back from the 4-by-800 to race in the 3,200 meter finals, and finished as the runner-up for that event.
The runners will continue to take this momentum into the spring season, as they set their eyes on the outdoor state championship meet on May 17.
