The Women’s lacrosse team here at Cardinal Gibbons during the spring season of 2022 made amazing things happen. Over the course of their season, they had an almost perfect record, with only two losses during their twenty-two game season. The team had momentum that carried them all the way to win the state championship game.

During the 2021 season, they made it to the quarterfinals before losing to their biggest rival. Inspired by this loss, the team set out to win the championship the very next year, vowing to themselves that they would improve and make it happen. Lauryn Ngucu, the starting goalie and a junior this year, was very open when asked about how she felt going into the playoffs.

“I didn’t understand why people were so upset and I was just there,” Ngucu said. “But as I got to know them throughout the season, I was like, this is really important to our seniors. I want to make this happen. So definitely determined.”

They used this going forward into the playoffs, defeating Chapel Hill, Wake Forest, East Chapel Hill, and Holly Springs, which got them to the championship game against Charlotte Catholic. The team had finally made their dream a real possibility. Early in the game, Gibbons was down by a couple goals, but they had gotten too far to lose now. Charlotte Jackson, a junior this year, told how she felt during the passing moments they were losing.

“It was really nerve wracking, but I think we all kind of knew that this was our time to come through,” Jackson said.

They were determined to make this dream a reality, so they pushed harder to get goals. They were able to catch up and keep pushing to go ahead, and they were able to hold them where they were, making sure their dream would become a reality. And that’s what happened, they won the state championship to prove that they were the best team they could be.
